BALI SCHOOL TRIP ITINERARY

 

Days 1-2 – Arrival & Orientation

 

Welcome to Bali! Your group will arrive at Denpasar International Airport (Ngurah Rai International Airport). Bali is a great location for school residential trips. On arrival, you will be greeted by Ketut and Indra from the PMGY Bali team who will be easily visible in their PMGY T-Shirts.

 

We will then transport you by private bus to your volunteer accommodation in Tabanan. The journey takes around 90 minutes. Tabanan will be your base for the first week of your school trip abroad with PMGY. You will have the chance to settle into your accommodation and enjoy your first Balinese cuisine with a freshly prepared welcome meal awaiting you.

 

Feeling re-energised after an evening sleep, you will have your first Balinese breakfast before beginning your orientation on day 2.

 

In the orientation, our local team will begin to teach you about life in Bali, do’s and don’ts, religion and the local culture. This will continue with a preview of your trip itinerary, safety advice and a presentation of all the projects we support in the community.

 

In the afternoon, our local coordinator will take you to see some of the famous sites around Tabanan, including the Subak Museum which incorporates collections of Balinese traditional agriculture tools as well as a visit to the traditional Tabanan night market. Finally, you will also have the chance to change money, go to the ATM and visit the supermarket.

 

After a full day induction to life in Bali, it’s time to reflect on your first full day in this amazing country. Tomorrow will be the start of your volunteering and giving back to the Tabanan community.

Days 3-5 – Childcare & Teaching Volunteering & Cultural Activities

 

We will start our project work on day 3. After a good breakfast at the accommodation, we will transport you by private transport to the project site.

 

It will be time for everyone to increase energy levels and prepare lots of games and activities as we spend our mornings supporting local kindergartens and childcare centres. You will play a crucial role in interacting with the children, keeping them entertained, building their confidence and teaching them basic English, life and social skills. There may also be the opportunity to improve the infrastructure of some of the kindergartens and centres we support with some light renovation and painting.

 

After busy mornings volunteering, it will be time to return to the volunteer accommodation ready for a well earned Balinese lunch to top up energy levels.

 

Following lunch, students will spend a little time preparing for the afternoon community teaching volunteer project. We will transport you to the community afterschool project by private transport. The program is initiated, funded and ran by PMGY providing free English lessons and education opportunities for children traditionally from poorer communities.

 

On each of your evenings in Tabanan, we will provide cultural and fun activities for you to enjoy. This will allow you to immerse yourself into the Balinese culture and lifestyle further and ensure your days remain action-packed! Examples will include a yoga class and a hot springs session.

Days 6-7 – Wildlife Rescue Volunteering & Cultural Activities

 

Days 6 and 7 will be your final days of the volunteer schedule for school trips in Bali. You will play a direct role in supporting our wildlife rescue program over the next couple of days. This will include supporting at our wildlife rescue centre as well as getting stuck into beach cleans and mangrove conservation.

 

Whilst on the wildlife project, you will work alongside the animal keeper and other staff members who have years of experience interacting with animals. Examples of your tasks will include helping with all feeding, cleaning, enrichment and maintenance activities. In addition, students will visit local beaches to collect disregarded items, before correctly disposing and recycling these. Finally, students will work directly with local villages to restore existing mangroves and plant new ones.

 

In the evenings, we will continue with our cultural activities including a visit to Tabanan Royal Palace and a Karaoke night. Tomorrow will be where the fun and adventure section of the trip really begins as we spend our second week travelling across Bali beginning with the Gili Islands.

Day 8 – Arrival into Gili Islands

 

After a full week volunteering and giving back to the community in Tabanan, it’s now time to spend the second week exploring and travelling what this amazing country has to offer!

 

Of to Gili we go! The Gili’s are a tiny group of three practically untouched palm-fringed, paradise islands just an hour and a half by boat from Bali. Each island has its own unique character. Trawangan Island is our home for the next few days! Universally known as Gili T, this is by far the most cosmopolitan, with its vibrant lifestyle and tropical chic accommodation and restaurants.

 

It hasn’t lost its serene atmosphere though, with no cars, motorbikes (or dogs!) and you can walk everywhere or maybe thumb a lift on a local horse and cart! There is so much you can squeeze out of your 3 days here, from some of the best snorkelling and kayaking in Indonesia to hiring a bike to cycle around the 3km long islet, stopping for picnics and swimming in the crystal clear waters en route.

 

It’s an early start on the morning of day 8 but it’s worth it to make the best of the weekend and be on your paradise island for 11am, ready to spend the day on the beach, on the water or on your bike. There will be a 2 hour drive from the accommodation to the harbour and then a 2 hour boat ride from the mainland to the islands meaning you will have to be ready to depart the accommodation bright and early around 7am. When you arrive at Gili T, you will have a chance to drop off your bags, collect a push-bike before heading to a local restaurant for a buffet lunch. The rest of day 8 will be yours to explore the island as you wish or simply soak up the Balinese sun on one of the islands many beaches. We will reconvene on the far side of the island for a spectacular Balinese sunset before enjoying our first evening meal on the island.

Days 9-10 – Gili T – Beach, Snorkelling, Viewpoints & Sunsets

 

The morning of day 9 will see you heading out to the ocean to enjoy all the underwater beauty of the Gilis. The waters around the islands are shallow, and occasional sightings of sea turtles roaming freely will be an added bonus. You’ll visit 3-4 snorkelling sites including the famous underwater statues, with a quick stop in Gili Air to grab a snack.

 

The snorkelling will last around 4 hours from start to finish, before returning to Gili T for a late lunch. After lunch, it’s time to explore the island a little bit more of the beaten track! Our local team will lead a short trek for the group to hike the treasure hill of Gili Trawangan. Gili Trawangan is the only island among the Gilis with a hill that you can climb up to discover a couple of great finds. Firstly, a mysterious shrine sits adjacent to a Muslim burial site, then further up is the crumbling remnants of a WWII Japanese machine-gun bunker. And upon reaching the top, you will claim your prize of a birds’ eye-view of the surrounding waters and the majestic outlines of Mount Rinjani on the neighbouring island of Lombok.

 

We will then settle as a group and remain on the adjacent side of the island to take in what will hopefully be a beautiful sunset and get your pictures on the famous Gili swings. There is a row of restaurants lighting up the shores of Trawangan and there is usually some fire dancers and fireworks on the sand to add to the nightly spectaculars!

 

We’ll not leave Gili until 3pm on the afternoon of day 10. Therefore, you’ve got the best part of the day to relax, sunbathe, snorkel, beach comb and we will squeeze in lunch for you too. As long as the weather conditions are smooth, we will expect to be back in Bali in the evening time just in time for dinner!

Day 11 – Temples & Rice Paddies

 

After an early breakfast, we drive to Gunung Kawi Temple based around the Pakerisan River North East of Ubud. It comprises 10 rock-cut Candi (shrines) that are carved into some 7-metre-high (23 ft) sheltered niches of the sheer cliff face. These funeral monuments are thought to be dedicated to King Anak Wungsu of the Udayana dynasty and his favourite queens.

 

On-route to Ubud we will next visit the Bali Tegalalang Rice Terrace. This area is a famous tourist attraction for beautiful rice terraces and has been designed with exquisite beauty in its hollowing rice field. It is precisely located on the hill bank showing off its spectacular panorama view of the valley with rice terrace and coconut trees that ornament it. You will see the Balinese farmers do their rice field routines complete with its system irrigation. We will have our lunch here surrounded by beautiful scenery.

 

The final stop of the day is Tirta Empul, a magnificent temple complex devoted to Vishnu, the Hindu God of Water, which dates back to 926 A.D. After admiring the striking temple, it’s time to put on a traditional sarong and sash, and head to the Holy Spring to take part in a blessing ceremony. Once you’ve made an offering to the Gods, you will be led into the pool by the temple priest to be blessed in the sacred waters. It’s time to get an early night after dinner as we have a very early start for the hike up Mount Batur to coordinate for an impressive sunrise at the summit!!

Day 12 – Mount Batur, Hot Springs & Ubud

 

Rise and shine! It’s 2am and time to depart the hostel for the trek of Mount Batur! You will arrive at the starting point of the hike in Toyabugnkah Village around 03:45 and begin the hike from here. Just after 6am you will make it to the top of Mount Batur and arrive at the conveniently named ‘Sunrise Point’ to hopefully take in a very impressive sunrise that the lack of sleep will make up for! At 7am we will continue the trek around the entire crater before beginning the descent at the finishing point around an hour later back down to Toyabungkah Village.

 

From the village, we will head directly to Toya Devasya Hot Springs where you have earned some well-deserved rest and relaxation for the next few hours.

 

After lunch, we will head into Ubud where you will have free time to navigate all the hustle and bustle Ubud centre represents. Whether you want to pick up souvenirs at the local markets, grab some coffee from the huge range of cafes or take in some of the ancient sites; the afternoon is completely free for you to explore.

 

We will have dinner in Ubud and you will have the evening to soak up the atmosphere in the centre of town.

Day 13 – Monkey Forest, Waterfalls & Sunset in Tanah

 

After breakfast, we’ll begin the day a little later around 10am heading to the infamous Ubud Monkey Forest. after breakfast in Ubud and drive back to Tabanan. The Ubud Monkey Forest is a nature reserve and Hindu temple complex. Its official name is the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary and as its name suggest you are sure to encounter many monkeys across the morning! After visiting the Monkey forest, we will stop for lunch.

 

We will end the afternoon with a walk up to Tegenungan Waterfall located in the sacred river of Petanu River. This is a really fun waterfall to visit in Bali and there are many steps to go down to the river if you would like to see the waterfall closer.

 

Our trip will end in Tanah to see the sunset. The Tanah Lot temple was built and has been a part of Balinese mythology for centuries. The temple is one of seven sea temples around the Balinese coast. After taking in the sunset, it’s time to head to Kuta which is the last stop for the itinerary.

Day 14 – Kuta & Hometime

 

Sadly, all good things must come to an end as we head south from Tanah to the coastal city of Kuta. Located on the west coast of Bali, Kuta is situated within close proximity of the airport for departure.

 

It is a popular beach town and will allow you to relax and reflect on a fantastic two weeks in Bali. In addition, there are plenty of options to pick up some last-minute souvenirs from the range of shops and stalls available to browse. Furthermore, it will provide a convenient transit gateway for our team to transfer you back to Denpasar International Airport in good time for your return flight home. It’s been a great two weeks!

ECUADOR SCHOOL TRIP ITINERARY

 

Day 1 – Arrival & Introduction to Host Families

 

Welcome to Ecuador! Your group will arrive at Quito International Airport. Quito is a great location for school trip ideas. On arrival, you will be greeted by Jorge from the PMGY Ecuador team who will be easily visible in his PMGY T-Shirt and standing by Amazonia Cafe meeting point in the arrivals terminal.

 

We will then transport you by private bus to your host family accommodation in central Quito. The city is the highest official capital in the world, resting at an elevation of 2,850 metres above sea level. Quito is classified as a UNESCO heritage site, still upholding many of its historical features that date back hundreds of years.

 

The journey takes around 45 minutes. Quito is the base for school trips abroad in Ecuador with PMGY. You will be supporting a range of projects and communities across Quito. In addition, Quito is a convenient hub for all the day trips you experience on school trips in Ecuador. This includes heading to the Equator, Quilotoa Lake and Tsachilas. You will have the chance to settle into your homestay accommodation and get to know your host families. They will provide you with a traditional Ecuadorian dinner that evening to introduce you to traditional Ecuadorian cuisine!

Day 2 – Orientation & Introductory Spanish Lesson

 

Your first morning in Ecuador will start with a cultural initiation at our local team Spanish School Headquarters. The location of which will be walking distance from your host family. Our host families will walk with you and drop you off at the school accordingly. The Spanish School will become your daily meeting point to meet the team before you head to your volunteer project or day trip.

 

You will have a basic group Spanish lesson in the morning led by our local coordinator. This will allow you to pick up a few basic words and phrases if required to set you up well for international school trips. Ecuador is one of twenty-one Spanish speaking countries in the world.

 

After a healthy lunch, you will receive your orientation. Our local team will begin to teach you about life in Ecuador, the do’s and don’ts, and the local culture and religion. This will continue with a preview of your trip itinerary, safety advice and a presentation of all the projects we support in the community. The team will also take you on a gentle walking tour of the local area so you are familiar with key points of interest and surrounding amenities. This will include giving students the chance to change money and visit the supermarket.

 

After a full day induction to life in Ecuador, it’s time to reflect on your first full day in this amazing country. Tomorrow will be the start of your volunteering and giving back to the Quito community.

Days 3-5 – Volunteering at San Roque Daycare Centre

 

We will start our project work on day 3. After a good breakfast at your host family, we will meet at the Spanish School at 9am each day to head to the volunteer project. Our local coordinator will travel with you by public transport to the project site.

 

It will be time for everyone to roll up their sleeves and get their thinking caps on for the next 3 days as students volunteer at San Roque Daycare Centre.

 

There are 90 children at the daycare centre. Consequently, students will split across each room so they can provide as many hands as possible and support the local staff to the maximum. A mix of our local staff and project staff are assigned to each group of students to ensure you have a support network across your 3 days at the project.

 

The children are aged from 1-3 years of age. Because children are at a very young age, students should focus on keeping activities interactive and engaging. Examples include playing games, dancing and arts and crafts. There will be plenty of materials at hand for you to make the most of your time on the project.

 

In addition, students will help staff with the daily chores at the project. This will including helping prepare and distribute the mid-morning snack.

 

Outside of the project, we will provide additional cultural and adventure activities for students to enjoy. This will allow you to immerse yourself into the Ecuadorian culture and lifestyle further and ensure your days remain action-packed! Examples will include a cooking class and an option to try the local Guinea Pig delicacy should you want to and some Salsa Dancing. Our host families will ensure you remain well fed by preparing traditional dinners for students each evening in addition to your breakfast and lunch.

Day 6 – Exploring the Equator

 

We will head for our first adventure outside of Quito on day 6. The origins of the name Ecuador translates into the equator and this is where we are off to today! We will be heading for a full day to explore the line that separates the northern and southern hemisphere.

 

The first port of call will be Mital Del Mundo which translates to the Middle of the World. You will be able to explore the park at your leisure and learn more about Ecuador’s history and indigenous communities through a range of exhibitions and displays. At the centre of the Mitad del Mundo stands the centrepiece of the park: a 30m-high monument topped by a brass globe containing a viewing platform and a museum.

 

We will finish our day exploring the equator by heading to the actual centre of the Earth as proven by GPS. Students will receive a guided tour revolving around the equator line. You will undertake some physics experiments that will show you the quirkiness of living life on the equator line.

 

We will drop you back to your host family in time for your evening meal. Students can get another good nights rest before heading out for another full day trip tomorrow.

Day 7 – Quilotoa Lake

 

Today we will head south to Quilotoa Lake. The journey time to reach the lake will take around 3 hours. Nearby the Andean Mountains, there is this beautiful emerald colour lagoon that is located inside a volcano crater. With a height of 3800m above sea level, students will receive a guided tour around the volcanic-crater lake and have many opportunities to take some spectacular photos.

 

A lookout on the crater rim offers stunning views of the lake 400m below, snowcapped peaks of Cotopaxi and Iliniza Sur in the distance. When you ask the locals how deep it is, they say it has no bottom, which seems entirely plausible given its awesomeness (the geologists say 250m).

 

After a day exploring this natural wonder, we will make the journey north back to Quito for a late dinner back at the host family before beginning a new volunteer project tomorrow.

Day 8 – Angels 4 Feet Volunteering & Salsa Class

 

Today will be a very unique volunteer experience as we head to the highest point in Ecuador to volunteer with Angels De 4 Patas. This translates into Angels for feet as we will spend our morning volunteering at a horse therapy project. Students will work with dogs, horses and also children who come to the project for therapy and stimulation by being with the animals.

 

There will be some spectacular views from the top so make sure to bring your camera! Moreover, it will be hot and humid so also bring your sunscreen, cap and plenty of water.

 

After lunch, we will prepare for our project work on day 9 by heading to the supermarket as a group to collect donations for the elderly shelter project. In the evening you will all partake in a salsa class before returning to host family for dinner and rest!

Day 9 – ABC Elderly Shelter Volunteering & Soccer

 

We will have a slightly later start today, so students can have an extended rest. We will spend the day volunteering at the ABC Elderly Shelter project which is located a short walk from the Spanish School Headquarters.

 

Students will get involved in a range of activities at the elderly shelter. This will include playing bingo, supporting food preparation in the kitchen or simply lending an ear to hear stories from the residents you will meet. There will be some great stories to learn and just by taking the time to listen and engage will go a long way for the people.

 

Our team will host an afternoon celebration session at the Spanish School for students to enjoy. This will include celebrating any birthdays, playing traditional party games and the team getting some feedback on how your Ecuador adventure has been going so far. In the evening we will head to Carolina Park to play a soccer match. After all, soccer is the national sport of Ecuador!

Day 10 – Childcare Volunteering, Guayasamin Museum & City Tour

 

The structure of day 10 will be slightly different. The morning will begin with a visit to a Guayasamin art museum in Quito. The museum showcases some of the work of the most famous South American painters.

 

From here, we will take private transport to an orphanage placement for the next volunteer segment for the students. Located outside of the city, the orphanage is around 1 hour away and home to 35 children.

 

Students will split into smaller groups to ensure greater engagement and interactions can be made with the children. You will provide care and attention for the children through a range of games and activities. You will also get creative in the kitchen as you prepare some pizza for you and the children to enjoy.

 

In the evening, it is time to explore Quito by night as we enjoy a nighttime city tour of Quito. The tour will last around 3 hours as visit many of the famous streets, churches and statues that Quito is renowned for.

Day 11 – Angels Home Therapy Volunteering & Pichincha Volcano

 

Day 11 will be our final day volunteering and supporting the project network in Quito. To get to the Angels Home Therapy Project, we will take a 45 minute journey south. The project is home to only 15 children, but each child has their own individual needs. More specifically, the children all have Cerebal Palsy and therefore have limited movements and can’t talk, but they can understand everything.

 

The children receive three types of therapy at the project. This includes horse therapy, water therapy and physiotherapy. Students will help in providing one to one care and engagement with the students under the guidance and support of the local staff.

 

In the afternoon, we will head to Pichincha Volcano. We will take a unique form of transport to reach the Volcano as we jump on a cable car to the highlands of Quito’s volcanoes. If the weather is good, you will have stunning panoramic views from the top and even a swing on the hilltop to enjoy!

Day 12 – Otavalo City

 

Your volunteering in Ecuador has now come to an end and we will spend our final couple days explore Ecuador further afield.

 

A very early start is in order on day 12 as we leave at 7am for Otavalo city which is located in the Andean highlands. This is a full day trip where we will have set timings for each activity.

 

Across the day we will take in some famous lake views and visit indigenous markets which is great for shopping and picking up some handicrafts. We will also visit the crater de volcano where you can witness 2 lakes segmented around the crater.

 

We will then head back to the host families in Quito and be home in time for dinner.

Day 13 – Tsachilas Tribe Tour

 

Today is our final full day in Ecuador and our last day exploring this amazing country. Another early start is required as we depart at 7am for the indigenous area of Tsachilas.

 

The journey will take us towards the coast as we move through the cloud forest area. Students will receive a very interactive experience as they meet with an indigenous tribe. The tribe only speak an indigenous language. Therefore they do not speak Spanish, English or even Quechuan.

 

Students will have a full day learning about the indigenous tribe and getting involved in their culture, music, food and clothing. You will enjoy one of their typical lunches and also paint your face as the local tribe members do.

 

You will spend much of the day by the river so it is important to bring all the essentials you need such as sunscreen, water, camera, mosquito repellent, towel and a pair of comfortable sturdy trainers.

 

We will again return back to the host families in time for one final evening meal in Ecuador.

Day 14 – Farewell Quito & Hometime

 

Sadly, all good things must come to an end as our 14 day Ecuador adventure comes to an end. Head to the central market in Quito to collect any final souvenirs required.

 

Our team will collect you from your host family in good time before your flight home. As a result, they will transfer you back to Quito International Airport for your return flight home. It’s been a great two weeks!

GHANA SCHOOL TRIP ITINERARY

 

Day 1-2 – Arrival & Travel to Kumasi

 

Akwaaba! You will arrive at Kotoka International Airport (Accra International Airport). Ghana is a great location for school trips abroad. On arrival into Accra International Airport, you will be greeted by Seth from the PMGY Ghana school travel company. He will be easily visible in his PMGY T-Shirt.

 

You will be taken straight to our partner hostel near the airport. The journey will take around 20 minutes. The taxi ride will provide you with your first glimpses of this amazing country.

 

Day 2 will start with a good breakfast at the hostel followed by the journey north to the city of Kumasi. This will be our base for the volunteering segments of the trip. The bus will be a comfortable and safe way to travel. The journey takes around 5 hours and our local team will accompany you. Some of the views along the way are breathtaking.

 

The rest of the day will be relaxed and informal. The team will be on hand to show you around the local community. In addition, they can help you pick up any amenities you may need for the rest of the day.

Day 3 – Orientation

 

Your orientation as a volunteer in Ghana will begin on day 3. We’ll kick the day off by introducing you to the local area and projects. In addition, our team will teach you how to locate every essential you may need during your time.

 

The next part of the induction day will be based around learning the cultures of the Asante people. Enjoy some very unique Ghanaian experiences as you visit the Manhyia Palace and Kejetia Market. More specifically, you will have the opportunity to explore Kumasi’s most bustling market and tour Manhyia Palace. With 11,000 stalls, the open-air market is a great place to pick up some traditional Ashanti kente cloth, food, spices and toiletries. In addition, the Palace museum will give you the chance to view some well-preserved artefacts of the Ashanti Kingdom.

 

Our team will assist you with any currency exchange and help you pick-up anything you may require. We’ll be sure to have a traditional Ghanaian lunch across the day too! The theoretical part of your orientation will then make up the rest of your induction day. Our team will go through important health and safety information to follow during your time as a volunteer in Ghana. We’ll teach you more about the way of life in West Africa, cultural differences and the local community. In the same vein, our team will also try to teach you the basics of the main language in Ghana, Twi. Finally, we will also provide you with a guide on what your coming days in Ghana will look like.

Day 4-6 – Community Volunteering & Cultural Activities

 

Day 4 will be your first day on your school residential trips volunteer placement. The group will spend the next three days of your first week giving back to the Kumasi community.

 

After a good breakfast at the accommodation, we will travel to the project site. It will be time for everyone to roll up their sleeves as each morning we will be making a tangible hands-on difference directly within the Kumasi community. We will work as one big group at a designated project where some much-needed renovation will be required. Project location examples of where the community renovation project could take place include local churches, kindergartens, government hospitals and primary schools. The exact project location for this will be decided closer to the time of your expedition whereby the need for a local project will be identified. This will ensure the impact we are making on the renovation project will be valuable and needed.

 

After busy mornings volunteering, it will be time for a well-earned Ghanaian lunch to top up energy levels. After lunch, you will spend a little time preparing and then departing for your afternoon community project. As part of a wider group, you will volunteer in a childcare setting that provides care for children both with and without disabilities. The emphasis at the projects will be providing as much care, attention and support for the children as possible. This includes helping with chores, providing one to one support and planning games and activities for the children to enjoy in free time.

 

On each of your school expeditions evenings in Kumasi, we will provide cultural and fun activities for you to enjoy. This will allow you to immerse yourself into the Ghanaian culture and lifestyle further and ensure your days remain action-packed! Examples will include a drumming lesson, traditional African dance class and a movie night.

Day 7-8 – Mole National Park, Larabanga Village, Waterfalls & Monkeys

 

At 5am on day 7, you will depart for the 5 hour journey north to Mole National Park. Upon arrival, you will check into the hotel located in the centre of the national park. Currently, it is the only standing hotel to be surrounded by the natural habitat of wildlife in the national park. After getting settled the group will have lunch and sit by the pool or if you would like to swim feel free!

 

By mid-afternoon, you will climb atop the jeep for the 2 hour safari in search of these beautiful creatures in their home. After finishing the jeep-top safari you will go back to the hotel for the evening meal. Once night falls, we will go to the nearby village of Larabanga to participate in some traditional drumming and dancing of the Northern Region.

 

At 7am on day 8, everyone will meet for another 2 hour safari on foot. You will walk through the jungle to encounter first- hand the route taken by many species of antelope, see the monkeys swinging through the trees, and the elephants bathing one another in the natural waters of the land.

 

Following the walking safari, you will have breakfast and depart from the hotel to continue on the journey. First stop will be at the Larabanga Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in West Africa, to learn about the Muslim traditions and the importance it holds in their tribe. The next stop is Kintampo Waterfalls; here you can enjoy a refreshing swim under the crashing waters.

 

Lastly, you will take a walk on the wild side feeding the monkeys of Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary out of your hands! We will finish the day with the travel back to the accommodation in Kumasi ready to begin week 2 of your school trip abroad!

Days 9-12 – Community Volunteering & Cultural Activities Continue

 

After a couple of days full of sightseeing and exploring, it’s time to continue our volunteer project work in Kumasi. The projects will run in the same structure as week 1 with both morning and afternoon community volunteering sessions and lunch provided in between. The morning session will see us finish off the hard work we started in week one at the renovating project.

 

The afternoon project structure will remain the same as it was in week 1 as your community project. You will hopefully feel more acclimatised and accustomed to the childcare project setting after settling in and building bonds with the children and local staff during your first week. The morning project will usually last around 2-3 hours. The afternoon project will also run for a similar time period.

 

Evening activities will continue on our international school trips. Such cultural activities will include an art class, local market tour, pizza night and a briefing about your upcoming Cape Coast trip!

Day 13-14 – Cape Coast, Canopy Walkway & Busua Beach

 

After working hard volunteering in Kumasi, it’s now time to play hard for your final few days in Ghana as we head off on one more Ghanaian adventure trip! We will leave Kumasi at 5am on day 13 and head down to the south of Ghana.

 

Our first calling point will be a visit to Cape Coast Castle. The tour is a fascinating but harrowing experience and an insight into horrific human cruelty. Thousands upon thousands of West African men and women were imprisoned within the castle’s dungeons, in the most inhumane conditions, before passing the ‘Door of No Return’ and being shipped off to the Americas. You will get to experience the thrilling feeling of walking the same steps as the African slaves in the dungeons out to the door of no return. Be prepared to learn about the shocking history of Ghana’s slave fortresses and their significance to modern-day Ghana.

 

The morning of day 14 offers a chance for a nice lie-in! You are welcome to awake at any time today as the beach awaits you. If you are up for an early morning we invite you to join us for the opportunity to pull in the nets of the local fishermen. Once the nets are in you can encounter many species of sea life including swordfish and tuna to squid and large manta ray!

 

The day is spent on the beach soaking up the sun, getting that tan that everyone at home expects you to return with. There are many souvenir shops locally where the local people love to show off their work! Throughout the day, based on the tide, we will take a surfing class. We can’t wait to capture videos of you up on that surfboard in the sea off the coast of Ghana! For our final night in Ghana, we will come together over a bonfire and enjoy some traditional drumming, dancing and singing!

Day 15 – Accra & Hometime

 

Sadly, all good things must come to an end. We will arrive back at Accra International Airport in good time for your flight home. Should the flight schedule allow, we will visit one or two points of interest in Accra on your final day in Ghana. This will include the Accra mall and Jamestown Lighthouse. It’s been a great two weeks on school trips abroad with PMGY!

INDIA SCHOOL TRIP ITINERARY

 

Days 1-2 – Arrival & Orientation

 

Welcome to India! Your group will arrive into Delhi International Airport (Indira Gandhi International Airport). Delhi is a great location for when your school volunteer abroad. On arrival, you will be greeted by Vishy from the PMGY India school travel company who will be easily visible in his PMGY T-Shirt.

 

We will then transport you by private bus to your volunteer accommodation in Faridabad. The journey takes around 60 minutes. Faridabad will be your base for the volunteering segments of the trip. You will have the chance to settle into your accommodation and enjoy your first Indian cuisine with a freshly prepared welcome meal awaiting you.

 

Feeling re-energised after an evening sleep, you will have your first Indian breakfast before beginning your orientation on day 2.

 

The day will kick-off with the theoretical aspects. During this, our team will cover everything from health and safety, language, money matters, cultural differences, rules and regulations. They will talk you through what is in store for the next 2 weeks. This part of the orientation usually lasts between 1 and 2 hours in the morning.

 

It’s then time to re-fuel with a filling lunch before getting ready to explore the local area in the afternoon. We will venture out to explore a local temple and visit the market. After a trip to the supermarket to pick up some essential snacks, students will return to the accommodation for a local Indian dinner and catch an early night’s sleep for the busy first day at project tomorrow.

Days 3-5 – Community Volunteering & Cultural Activities

 

We will start our project work on day 3. After a good breakfast at the accommodation, we will transport you by private transport to the project site. It will be time for everyone to roll up their sleeves as each morning we will be making a tangible hands-on difference directly within the Faridabad community.

 

We will work as one big group at a designated project where some much-needed renovation will be required in the local slum communities. Project location examples of where the community renovation project could take place include health camps, hospitals, local churches and primary schools. The exact project location for this will be decided closer to the time of your expedition whereby the need for a local project will be identified. This will ensure the impact we are making on the renovation project will be valuable and needed.

 

After busy mornings volunteering, it will be time for a well-earned Indian lunch to top up energy levels. After lunch, you will spend a little time preparing and then departing for your afternoon community project. This will be at a childcare community-based setting. The emphasis at the childcare projects will be teaching English, helping with homework and planning activities and games to make the sessions as productive and engaging as possible.

 

It will be time for everyone to increase energy levels and prepare lots of games and activities as we spend our mornings supporting local kindergartens and childcare centres. You will play a crucial role in interacting with the children, keeping them entertained, building their confidence and teaching them basic English, life and social skills. There may also be the opportunity to improve the infrastructure of some of the kindergartens and centres we support with some light renovation and painting.

 

On each of your evenings in Faridabad, we will provide cultural and fun activities for you to enjoy. This will allow you to immerse yourself into the Indian culture and lifestyle further and ensure your educational school trips remain action-packed! Examples will include watching a Bollywood movie, partaking in a pottery class and enjoying a cooking lesson.

Day 6 – Old Delhi

 

It’s time for our first full day of exploring on the school trip abroad as we head into Old Delhi. The walled city of Old Delhi is always fast-paced so we will need to make sure to keep up with the buzzing locals.

 

We will first visit The Red Fort, a historic fort which housed emperors for over 200 years. We will stroll the grounds and take in the overwhelming sites of Delhi’s most famous landmark.

 

Our next temple of the trip will be the Hindu temple, Birla Mandir. This major Delhi monument is home to some of the most beautiful buildings we will see on this trip.

 

We will finish the day at 7 wonders of world park. Make sure you bring your camera, as in just one park we will get to see all 7 wonders of the world! Maybe not the real ones, but this park holds replicas of all 7 famous monuments, and it is all made out of scrap and recycled material. So, snap away and enjoy these iconic buildings. We will return back to the accommodation in time for the evening meal.

Day 7 – New Delhi

 

We will wake up bright and early as we head back into Delhi. It’s out with the old and in with the new as today we take in a full day exploring New Delhi. We will have breakfast at the accommodation and drive around 1 hour to get into the hustle and bustle of the capital. The day will include famous sites around the city.

 

Our first stop will be the Lodhi Gardens, one of Delhi’s most picturesque parks. We’ll get a chance to stroll around the beautiful grounds exploring the famous tombs or kick back and enjoy the incredible buildings such as the beautiful dome building. Across the day we will also make our way to the imposing India Gate located in the heart of New Delhi. The Arc de Triomphe-style gate commemorates the Indian soldiers that lost their lives in the First World War.

 

We’ll also visit Humayun’s Tomb, a splendid site built-in memory of Emperor Humayun. Learn about the life of the Emperor as we explore the grounds and get an insight into the history of the country.

 

Our final stop of the day will be the Gandhi Museum, where we will learn about the life and principles of the famous Mahatma Gandhi. Get an insight into the man who led India into independence. Learn about his teachings that altered the whole country into what it is today.

 

We will return to the accommodation for dinner and have the rest of the evening free to ensure you have some time to relax after our hectic couple of days in the crazy capital.

Days 8-10 – Community Volunteering & Cultural Activities Continue

 

After two days full of sightseeing and exploring, it’s time to continue our volunteer project work in Faridabad. The projects will run in the same structure as previously with both morning and afternoon sessions running and lunch provided in between.

 

With the renovation project now completed, we will continue our morning volunteer work in the slum community but this time in the classroom. Your mornings will now be focussed on teaching English in the slum school our local team have established. The Eco Slum school will be your base and this has been established in the heart of Faridabad’s largest local slum community. Play your part in providing free basic primary education to children from very underprivileged backgrounds. Teach English, Maths and lead the daily assembly with nursery rhymes and dance.

 

You will continue your afternoon volunteering on the childcare project. This will be at the same location as your first week. Hopefully, you can now begin to see real progress as you get to know the children a little better. Cultural activities will continue in the evenings with a yoga class and a Bollywood dance class.

Days 11-12 – Jaipur – The Pink City, Stairwells & Temples

 

After the final days of volunteering and giving back to the community in Faridabad, it will be time to travel and explore the world-famous India golden triangle, starting with Jaipur. We will be leaving early in the morning as the drive to Jaipur from Faridabad is approximately 5 hours.

 

We’ll kick off the trip with an early departure from the accommodation as we make the long drive to Jaipur. The first port of call in the pink city will be the visit to the Amber Fort, the former palace of the Kachchawahs. Amber Fort sits on a hilltop and faces out over the Maota Lake. It’s a truly beautiful sight to behold.

 

We will then travel onto the Albert Hall Museum, Hawa Mahal and Jal Mahal (a palace located in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake in Jaipur city). Take the evening to rest up and relax as we have another full day of exploring Jaipur to follow after a good nights sleep!

 

Day 12 provides another exciting opportunity to explore the famous pink city further. After breakfast, it’s time to begin our day of exploration before we head to Agra.

 

We will begin at Charan Mandir, an ancient Hindu temple, dedicated to the honour of Lord Krishna. Built like a mini fortress, and located deep within the forest, the temple was created before Jaipur was even established. It is believed that Lord Krishna once stepped through the grounds of the temple! Not only does this temple represent a significant place of worship, but it also offers a stunning panoramic view of the city and surrounding forests.

 

Our second stop of the day is to Chand Baori Stepwell. This landmark is believed to be one of the oldest, and most picturesque in the region. Stepwells are pond-type structures, encased within a staircase enclosure. They are a type of storage tank, created with an intention to manage seasonal fluctuations in water availability by conserving water. In the past, Chand Baori was a hotspot for members of the Jaipur community during the heated summer months, who gathered together in an attempt to cool down by the waters.

 

Our final stop in Jaipur is Jagat Shiromani Temple, another Hindu temple, this time dedicated to the Hindu Gods of not only Krishna but Meera bai and Vishnu. We will then travel another 5 hours to the historic city of Agra in the evening where we will have dinner and get a good night’s sleep ready to be up early for the big day tomorrow.

Day 13 – The Taj Mahal & Agra Fort

 

Time to get up early for one of the most memorable days you will ever have, to explore one of the wonders of the world!

 

The Taj Mahal needs no introduction. Arguably the most beautiful building in the world, the Taj Mahal is the undoubted sightseeing highlight of any trip to India. We’ll be up bright and early as we make our way to the Taj Mahal for sunrise – epic photo opportunities guaranteed. An English speaking guide will teach us all about the story which inspired the building of the Taj Mahal and the tragedy involved in creating it.

 

We will then spend the rest of the day exploring Agra Fort nearby and its historic fort. The Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site not to be missed and is more informally described as ‘the walled city’.

 

After a full morning at the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, we’ll get something to eat, go round one of the local markets and then head back to the accommodation after what has been an action-packed weekend trip in the North of India!

 

We will return to the accommodation in the evening time. Use your final night in India to reflect on what an amazing 2 weeks it has been.

Day 14 – Farwell Faridabad & Hometime

 

Sadly, all good things must come to an end as we spend our last day in Faridabad. There will be a chance to say final farewells at the community projects, have one last supper with the team and head to the market for any last-minute souvenirs.

 

Our team will transfer you back to Delhi International Airport in good time for your return flight home. It’s been a great two weeks enjoying PMGY’s school trips abroad!

SOUTH AFRICA SCHOOL TRIP ITINERARY

 

Days 1-2 – Arrival, Orientation & Walking Tour

 

Welcome to South Africa! Your group will arrive into Cape Town International Airport. Cape Town is a great location for expeditions for schools. On arrival, you will be greeted by Kevin from the PMGY South Africa school expedition company who will be easily visible in his PMGY T-Shirt.

 

We will then transport you by private bus to your homestay accommodation in Kayamandi. Located in a suburb of Stellenbosch in the Western Cape, Kayamandi is a very well-known university town in the heart of the Cape Winelands. The journey takes around 45 minutes. Kayamandi will be your base for the first week of your school trip abroad in South Africa with PMGY. You will have the chance to settle into your homestay accommodation and get to know your host families. We will have a traditional ‘Welcome Braai’ (Barbecue Dinner) that evening to introduce you to traditional South African cuisine!

 

Feeling re-energised after an evening sleep, you will have your first South African breakfast before beginning your school trips orientation on day 2.

 

In the orientation, our local team will begin to teach you about life in South Africa, do’s and don’ts, religion and the local culture. This will continue with a preview of your trip itinerary, safety advice and a presentation of all the projects we support in the community.

 

In the afternoon, our local coordinator will take you on a walking tour of Cape Town. As a result, you will get the chance to see some of the city’s major sites. In the same vein, you will also learn about its tragic history. Highlights of the tour will include St George’s Cathedral, Parliament Building, Green Market Square and The Castle of Good Hope. Finally, you will also have the chance to change money, go to the ATM and visit the supermarket.

 

After a full day induction to life in South Africa, it’s time to reflect on your first full day in this amazing country. Tomorrow will be the start of your volunteering and giving back to the Kayamandi community.

Days 3-6 – Community Volunteering in Kayamandi & Cultural Activities

 

We will start our project work on day 3. After a good breakfast at the accommodation, we will transport you by private transport to the project site. Many townships in Cape Town consist of a large number of deprived young children and Kayamandi Township is no different. You will receive a walking tour and induction of the township with a local guide before you start volunteering at the township project. This is so you can understand the background, history and struggles that the community has and continues to face. As a result, you will have a greater understanding of the purpose of your volunteering and the impact you can make.

 

Students will spend their next few days supporting at crèche and kindergarten facilities in the heart of Kayamandi. You will play a crucial role in interacting with the children, keeping them entertained, building their confidence and teaching them basic English, life and social skills.

 

There will also be the opportunity to improve the infrastructure of one of the kindergartens/primary schools in the township with some light renovation and painting. Students will be given full freedom to get creative and add life and colour to a facility that cannot afford to do so themselves. We create a brighter learning space for the children!

 

Outside of the project, we will provide additional cultural and adventure activities for students to enjoy. This will allow you to immerse yourself into the South African culture and lifestyle further and ensure your days remain action-packed! Examples will include a bicycle tour of Stellenbosch, jewellery making, a nature reserve hike and a drumming lesson. Our host families will ensure you remain well fed by preparing traditional dinners for students each evening in addition to your breakfast and lunch.

Day 7 – Exploring Cape Town, Robben Island & The V&A Waterfront

 

The opportunities in Cape Town really are endless, we will do our best to fit the best bits in! There really is something for everyone and over the next 7 days, we will do our best to explore not only the breadth of Cape Town but also the Western and Eastern Capes as we travel on the infamous Garden Route.

 

Starting in central Cape Town, students will enjoy a morning tour of the historical Robben Island. Used as a prison right up until 1996, this Unesco World Heritage site is preserved as a memorial to those such as Nelson Mandela who spent many years incarcerated there. Students will walk through the old prison (with the obligatory peek into Mandela’s cell) and enjoy a commentated bus ride around the island. You will also see the lime quarry in which Mandela and many others slaved and the church used during the island’s stint as a leper colony.

 

We will then head back to the mainland for a late lunch before exploring the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Waterfront. Located in the heart of Cape Town’s working harbour, the V&A Waterfront offers students an abundance of experiences. It is one of Africa’s most visited cultural and historical hubs, set on the edge of a natural, historic working harbour with the iconic Table Mountain as its backdrop. You will find a range of restaurants, shops and hotels surrounding the highly impressive marina. There is usually live music being played throughout the day.

 

Free time will also be available for students to navigate central Cape Town at their leisure before we head back to the homestay accommodation for the evening meal.

Day 8 – Cape Peninsula Tour

 

Following an early morning breakfast at the homestay, its time for a full-day open-top bus tour of Cape Towns Peninsula. This is your chance to experience the scenic beauty and natural landscapes of South Africa’s Cape Peninsula. You will get to travel along scenic coastal roads to picture-perfect Hout Bay where you can spot seals and take time to wander the shops.

 

You can explore the World of Birds Reserve at your leisure. This tropical park is home to 400 bird species in walk-through aviaries, plus small mammals & reptiles.

 

In addition, we will explore Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in the UNESCO-listed Cape Floral Kingdom. Finally, take the time to grab a drink and relax at Camps Bay Beach with stunning views to enjoy. Lunch and dinner will be provided on the tour so you will not go hungry!

Day 9 – Cape Town – Hermanus

 

After 8 days based in Cape Town and its Kayamandi suburb, it’s now time to spend your next few days travelling South Africa’s Garden Route! Before we do, we will have one final chance to say goodbye to the children at the project in the Kayamandi Township and have a farewell lunch with our homestay families.

 

It’s now time to hit the road and to further explore the Western Cape as we head to Hermanus! Our first calling point is Betty’s Bay! At Stony Point in Betty’s Bay, we get close to about 5000 African penguins. Entrance is included and photo opportunities will be in abundance!

 

Our second stop of the day will be Kogelberg Biosphere. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has more plant species than many countries and is one of the best natural showrooms for the diversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom. We will then enjoy the renowned Clarence Drive as we make our way to Hermanus. This coastal road winds between the ocean and mountains, passing seaside villages of wild beauty and rugged mountain scenery.

 

Hermanus is a laid-back seaside town with excellent restaurants and impressive coastline. The town offers some of the best shore-based and sea-based whale-watching opportunities in the world and is known as the whale-watching capital of South Africa. Spend the evening wandering along the cliff paths looking for whales in Hermanus. Alternatively, the holiday town has its share of boutique shops, art and craft studios to explore.

Days 10-11 – Hermanus – Oudtshoorn – Sedgefield

 

It’s an early morning departure from Hermanus as we join the rugged landscapes of Route 62, the longest wine route in the world! Stop at one of the many farm stalls along the way to sample local delights before we arrive into Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world. Naturally, we will take time to visit an ostrich farm where students will learn more about the world’s largest bird.

 

Afterwards, we will delve deeper underground to the magical Cango Caves. These caves are an illuminated wonderland of subterranean magic and mystery, with passageways and chambers meandering far below. Students will enjoy a tour that will explore the narrow passages and vast halls filled with colourful ancient stalactites and remnants of Khoikhoi paintings. The easy-going Heritage Tour you will embark on will allow you to test the cave’s acoustics and gain insights your guide provides into the formation and dripstone evolution. You’ll spend the evening in the quaint town of Oudtshoorn where you could try local delicacies such as ostrich kebabs.

 

We’ll spend the morning of day 11 taking to the water for a leisurely canoe ride along reed-lined river banks in the Wilderness lagoon. It’s not until you stop paddling and let the gentle current guide you, that the abundance of birdlife becomes apparent. Take the time to enjoy your surroundings and immerse yourself in a pure encounter with nature. Once we are inside the Wilderness National Park, students will undertake a 2km hike along a boardwalk which takes you to a spectacular waterfall.

 

We will then continue on the coastal road on our journey to Sedgefield as we end day 11 with a fun and adventurous quad biking tour. The rest of the day and evening will be yours to explore Sedgefield. It is a quiet town situated in the middle of the Garden Route. Sedgefield is flanked by beaches, a lagoon and mountains.

Day 12 – Sedgefield – Tsitsikamma

 

Day 12 will see us head from Sedgefield to Tsitsikamma National Park. On the way, we will stop at Knysna. The popular holiday town adopts a lively buzz and lies between forested mountains and the sea, curving around a big lagoon. We will make a stop at the Heads, where the sea crashes through two massive sandstone cliffs.

 

The second port of call for the day will be Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary located in The Crags. Students will get to experience the world’s first free-roaming multi-species primate sanctuary. Enjoy the unique experience of viewing 700+ resident primates in their forest home.

 

Once we reach Tsitsikamma National Park, we will spend time in this paradise exploring the marine reserve with its unique combination of dramatic coastal and forest landscapes. Students will walk along forest trails to a suspension bridge and find a quiet spot from where to absorb this beauty. The lush forests of the Tsitsikamma area will provide picturesque photo opportunities. The overnight base will be in the quaint Stormsriver Village.

Day 13 – Tsitsikamma

 

This morning we will go zip-lining through a deep gorge and over waterfalls. There are 9 zip lines with the longest being 211 meters.

 

Afterwards, we will head to Jeffery’s Bay for some surfing and shopping. Jbay is home to the best right-hand point break in the world, here you have the opportunity to go for a surf lesson before we stop at the Billabong, Rip Curl and Quicksilver factory shops for excellent deals. Outside of surfing and shopping, enjoy the bays famous abundant seashells, great seafood and calamari.

 

We will spend our final night in Port Elizabeth. Located on Algoa Bay in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province, the city centre has started to smarten up thanks to a few urban regeneration projects and numerous heritage buildings.

Day 14 – Farewell South Africa & Hometime

 

Sadly, all good things must come to an end as our two week international school trips finish. Spend your last few hours exploring Port Elizabeth at your leisure. You will find many good bathing beaches and great surf spots in Algoa Bay. Marine life in the bay is also sensational, with plenty of dolphins and whales that can be spotted throughout the year.

 

Port Elizabeth provides a convenient transit gateway for our team to transfer you back to Port Elizabeth International Airport in good time for your return flight home. It’s been a great two weeks on one of PMGY’s school trips abroad!

SRI LANKA SCHOOL TRIP ITINERARY

 
Days 1-2 – Arrival & Orientation

 

Welcome to Sri Lanka! Your group will arrive at Colombo International Airport (Bandaranaike International Airport). Sri Lanka is a great location for school expeditions abroad. On arrival, you will be greeted by Ashika from the PMGY school travel company who will be easily visible in his PMGY T-Shirt.

 

We will then transport you by private bus to your volunteer accommodation in Ambalangoda. The journey takes around 2-3 hours. Ambalangoda will be your base for the first week of your school trip in Sri Lanka with PMGY. You will have the chance to settle into your accommodation and enjoy your first Sri Lankan cuisine with a freshly prepared welcome meal awaiting you.

 

Feeling re-energised after an evening sleep, you will have your first Sri Lankan breakfast before beginning your orientation on day 2.

 

In the orientation, our local team will begin to teach you about life in Sri Lanka, the do’s and don’ts, and the local culture and religion. This will continue with a preview of your trip itinerary, safety advice and a presentation of all the projects we support in the community.

 

In the afternoon, we will take you to see some of the famous sites around Ambalangoda, including the longest sleeping Buddha statue in Asia and an original blue moonstone mine. You will learn more about Buddhism and how the local people follow this philosophy as well as furthering your understanding of some of the local traditions. Finally, you will also have the chance to change money and visit the supermarket.

 

After a full day induction to life in Sri Lanka, it’s time to reflect on your first full day in this amazing country. Tomorrow will be the start of your volunteering and giving back to the Ambalangoda community.

Days 3-6 – Renovation & Teaching Volunteering & Cultural Activities

 

We will start our project work on day 3. After a good breakfast at the accommodation, we will transport you by private transport to the project site.

 

It will be time for everyone to roll up their sleeves as each morning across the next 4 days you will be making a tangible hands-on difference directly within the Ambalangoda community. Such a project will involve painting and renovating either a local school, hospital or temple. In short, supporting projects that struggle to find funding and labour support to undertake important development work.

 

After busy mornings volunteering, it will be time to return to the volunteer accommodation ready for a well earned Sri Lankan lunch to top up energy levels.

 

Following lunch, students will spend a little time preparing for the afternoon community teaching volunteer project. We will transport you to the village afterschool project by private transport. The program is initiated, funded and ran by PMGY providing free English lessons and education opportunities for children traditionally from lower-income families.

 

On each of your educational school trips evenings, we will provide cultural and fun activities for you to enjoy. This will allow you to immerse yourself into the Sri Lankan culture and lifestyle further and ensure your days remain action-packed! Examples will include a cultural dance show, traditional hands craft session and a lecture about Sri Lankan meditation.

Day 7 – Sea Turtle Conservation & Beach, Bonfire & BBQ

 

Day 7 will be the fifth and final day of the volunteer schedule for school expeditions in Sri Lanka. You will play a direct role in helping to protect and rehabilitate at-risk sea turtles. The long term goal of the project is to release turtles back into the wild where possible.

 

You will support local staff with the typical daily duties that are required to care for the sea turtles. Examples will include helping with all feeding, cleaning, maintenance and education routines.

 

In the evening, we will head to the beach and release hatched baby turtles back into the sea. A fantastic experience that is not to be missed! We will end the day with a bonfire and beach BBQ to reflect on our volunteer week in Ambalangoda. Tomorrow will be where the fun and adventure section of the trip really begins as we spend our second week travelling across this fantastic island.

Days 8-9 – Galle Fort, Stick Fishing & Mirissa Beach

 

After a full week volunteering and giving back to the community in Ambalangoda, it’s now time to spend the second week of your school trips exploring and travelling! Let’s see what this amazing country has to offer!

 

It’s now time to head to Galle for the morning. The drive to Galle will take around one hour as we begin our trip around the south of the island!

 

Galle is always a favourite amongst many travellers in Sri Lanka. The UNESCO World Heritage site of Galle Fort was originally built in the 16th Century by the Portuguese, then extensively modified by the Dutch a century later. There’s a winding maze of streets with Colonial-era architecture mixing old and new between the ancient Fort walls. You will spend time walking across the Fort, taking in the beautiful scenery and spotting turtles in the ocean beyond.

 

After finishing in Galle, it’s time to go stick fishing in Weligama. This is your chance to learn about the traditional Sri Lankan art of stick fishing! If you’d like to try it out yourself, be prepared to get splashed!

 

As we approach day 9, the time has finally arrived for some free time in Mirissa to relax by the beach after what has been a jam-packed itinerary so far. Situated on the south coast, Mirissa is a beautiful little fishing village with a picture-postcard beach setting.

 

Your time in Mirissa is your oyster and you will spend the afternoon of day 8 and the whole of day 9 soaking it up! Mirissa has a number of water activities you can do to keep you entertained, such as bodyboarding, snorkelling and whale watching. Otherwise, you may wish to simply put your feet up and relax!

Day 10 – Elephant Safari & Baby Elephant Feeding

 

It’s an early start as we make the 3 hour drive across to Udawalawe National Park for a 3 hour morning safari. With a herd of around 250 permanent resident elephants, the area is one of the most visited national parks in the whole country. Be sure to keep an eye out for many of the wild birds, sloth bears and reptiles that you can also encounter on the safari as well.

 

The national park was specifically created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir. The reserve thus provides an important habitat for many Sri Lankan elephants, crocodiles and amazing leopards, with many attracted to the park because of the reservoir.

 

Following an epic safari and a tasty lunch, you will get the chance to witness the baby elephant afternoon feed! More specifically, you will get the chance to see between 20-50 baby elephants being fed at a nearby elephant orphanage to Udawalawe. This is the only place in the whole of Sri Lanka to see baby elephants feeding. Your group will spend an hour or so observing the afternoon feed before we head north to the hill country town of Ella for the next leg of the journey.

Days 11-12 – Ella, Little Adam’s Peak & Nuwara Eliya

 

Ella represents a picturesque village in the hill country. We will visit one of its biggest attractions which is the famous Nine Arch Bridge. Based on the Demodara loop, it is a spectacular feat of engineering and construction spanning 91 metres. The beautiful nine arches make it a very picturesque spot, especially as it is located in a dense jungle and agricultural setting. We will take a 20 minute walk off the beaten track down and around the bridges, with many picturesque views and photo opportunities along the way.

 

You will then have a chance to settle into central Ella and take in everything this beautiful small laid-back town has to offer. Why not try its famous local delicacy of coconut and chocolate roti?

 

We will be early again on day 12 as we head to Little Adam’s Peak located just outside of Ella Town. We will partake in a relatively pleasant and not too strenuous 45 minute hike up to the summit of Little Adam’s Peak in time for sunrise. The stunning views are well worth the gentle hike as you capture endless valleys of tea plantations and waterfalls. What a great way to start the day!

 

After having lunch in Ella we will make our way to Nuwara Eliya. You will witness some of Sri Lanka’s most awe-inspiring scenery on the drive which includes rolling hills and enchanting waterfalls.

 

Located in the heart of Sri Lanka, Nuwara Eliya was established by British colonialists and is now often referred to as ‘Little England’. The town is surrounded by lush green hills and dotted with English country style houses and half-timbered bungalows. We’ll visit a tea factory where you’ll get the chance to take a tour of the tea plantations. In addition, we will stop at Ravana Falls. It currently ranks as one of the widest falls in the country.

Days 13-14 – Kandy – The Cultural Capital

 

After an early breakfast at the accommodation, its time to make our way to the city of Kandy. Located in the centre of the island, surrounded by green hills and full of cultural significance – Kandy is the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. It is also the southern tip of Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle. The city hosts the Temple of the Tooth Relic (the sacred tooth of the Buddha), which is a famous pilgrimage site. The picturesque central lake on the other side of town offers a more relaxed feel than the busy town centre.

 

You’ll receive a guided tour of Kandy’s ancient Temple of the Tooth as you learn about its significance to Buddhism. Kandy is also a great place to do some shopping as the end of your time in Sri Lanka approaches. With a vibrant mix of local markets and high street stores as well as a wood carving factory, you won’t be short of choice as far as souvenir shopping goes.

Day 15 – Negombo & Hometime

 

Sadly, all good things must come to an end as we head east from Kandy to the coastal city of Negombo. Located on the west coast of Sri Lanka, Negombo is situated within close proximity of the airport for departure.

 

It is a modest beach town and will allow you to relax and reflect on a fantastic two weeks in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, it will provide a convenient transit gateway for our team to transfer you back to Colombo International Airport in good time for your return flight home. It’s been a great two weeks on one of PMGY’s school trips abroad!

🇮🇩 Tabanan – Bali

 

The school trip projects are based in Tabanan, around 2 hours away from Ngurah Rai (Denpasar) International Airport. Tabanan is the capital town of the regency of Bali with the same name. It is referred to by many as the ‘rice bowl of Bali’. Parts of Tabanan regency lie in Central Bali and others in the west.

 

Tabanan regency is best known for its rolling green landscapes and hills. It is also home to Mount Batukaru – Bali’s second-highest peak at 2,276 metres. Tabanan town itself is a very commercial town, with no shops or entertainment facilities aimed at visitors or tourists. Despite this, the town offers all the amenities you need, such as banks, hospitals and shops. There are lots of minivans available in the town of Tabanan. These are coloured mini-vans that act as the main public transport on the island. These may be useful in getting you to interesting sights in the region. Taxis and private vehicles can be available but are much thinner on the ground in this region.

 

🇪🇨 Quito – Ecuador

 

International school trips in Ecuador are based in Quito, the country’s capital in the Andes Mountains. The city is the highest official capital in the world, resting at an elevation of 2,850 metres above sea level. Quito is classified as a UNESCO heritage site, still upholding many of its historical features that date back hundreds of years. This city’s location among the mountain tops leaves volunteers in Ecuador with majestic views of city life, wilderness and history.

 

Quito is a unique and centralised location to live and work in. It has all the amenities you could require, such as banks, hospitals, nightlife and shops. There is also a central bus and train station to take you to the many different regions of Ecuador. During your time, you can find yourself at a prime spot to visit the earth’s equator or perhaps enjoy panoramic views from the Teleférico. Perhaps you could even squeeze in a flight to the Galapagos Islands for a long weekend.

 

🇬🇭 Kumasi – Ghana

 

Our educational school trips are based in Kumasi. Located in central Ghana, the city is around 6 hours away from Kotoka Airport in Accra. Kumasi is Ghana’s second-biggest city and the capital of the Ashanti region. It is a bustling city with so much going on! The surrounding area is made up of rolling hills and rural areas, with a much more laid back approach in life. Although based in an under-developed country, you will find all the amenities you may require. This includes international standard hospitals, banks, supermarkets, restaurants and lively bars. Kumasi’s central location makes it a bus transport hub. This makes it the perfect starting point to explore Ghana during your weekends! You will find our two most popular weekend trips are visits to the Cape Coast and Mole National Park.

 

Every sixth Sunday of the year, Kumasi celebrates the Adae. This is a celebration where the king of the Ashanti Region opens the palace gates to accept homage from his people. The event showcases the Asante lifestyle at its most traditional. Drumming displays, elaborate dancing and rainbow robes make up the general air of fantasy of the Adae celebration. Visitors are welcome and this a really fun experience to be part of. It’s not every day you get to meet a king!

 

🇮🇳 Delhi – India

 

Our school expeditions are based in Faridabad, located in the New Delhi region of North India. It is around 1 hour away from Delhi Airport. New Delhi is one of the fastest-growing cities in the world. Old Delhi and New Delhi show signs of past and present. Not only does Delhi contain historical gems, but it has all the modern amenities one could desire in a modern city.

 

Volunteers will stay in the city of Faridabad, located in the National Capital Region (NCR) of New Delhi. The city is close enough to absorb the influence of New Delhi. On the contrary, it is also far enough away to offer a quieter setting. Together, these factors mean that Faridabad is a comfortable location to live and work. There are some interesting temples and local parks in Faridabad for you to visit, as well as markets and shopping malls. There are also a handful of cinemas for you to catch a Bollywood flick, should you fancy!

 

🇿🇦 Cape Town – South Africa

 

Our school trips abroad are based in the heart of Cape Town, around 30 minutes from Cape Town International Airport. Cape Town is a truly multicultural city and exhibits stark contrasts. Central Cape Town is an exciting and trendy location filled with a range of cultural heritage sites and a buzzing nightlife. Yet, as you move towards the suburbs, you begin to see what life is like for those less fortunate. The Townships and Cape Flats here highlight the disparity between rich and poor.

 

Our local team’s office and Volunteer House are based in central Cape Town. This means that our international volunteers in Cape Town are perfectly positioned to enjoy the wonders of this amazing city. In your free time, you could be soaking up some history at Robben Island (the infamous offshore prison that held Nelson Mandela), trekking up Table Mountain or surfing the waves of Clifton beach. The choices are endless! You will find our two most popular weekend trips are visits to the Garden Route and Western Cape trips. Other less popular options include the Kruger National Park and marine conversation trips to George.

 

🇱🇰 Ambalangoda – Sri Lanka

 

Your school trip abroad in Sri Lanka is based on the southwest coast, in Ambalangoda. This is approximately 2.5 hours away from Colombo Airport. Ambalangoda is a quaint ocean-side town. It is traditionally a fishing community but is famous for being the major production centre for demonic wooden masks. The town has all the amenities you could require as a volunteer in Sri Lanka. This includes banks, hospitals and shops. In addition, the beach is just a short tuk-tuk ride from the Volunteer House. There is also a central bus and train station and the people are unbelievably friendly in Ambalangoda!

After confirming your place on a PMGY volunteer program, we strongly advise that you book your flights as early as possible. This is since it will help ensure that you get the lowest airfare. You can choose to book your flights independently or we can help you with arranging them. PMGY has a wealth of experience in travelling to and from our host countries. Therefore, we know the most affordable ways to travel and the best airlines to use. Therefore, if you would like any assistance booking your flight, you can request an optional flight quote during your online application. Travel Insurance

 

Importantly, having an appropriate travel insurance policy during your time abroad is essential. Therefore, it is mandatory for all of our international volunteers to be appropriately covered across all of their trip dates. This includes your travel to and from the host country, as well as any onward travel. Although PMGY does everything to ensure your trip is safe, inevitably things can go wrong. Therefore, having a travel insurance policy in place helps you effectively deal with any problems you may encounter during your time away.

 

We have partnered up with the insurance company Endsleigh to create an affordable and comprehensive optional policy. This has been designed with our international volunteers in mind, to cover our participants for all of their travel essentials. The policy is available to anyone across the globe, up to the age of 65 years. The document will cover you for your time on any PMGY destination and any onward travel (excluding the US and Canada). You can purchase PMGY Travel Insurance during your online application or you can contact us directly to arrange it.

Our International Team will work hard to provide extensive levels of support in the build-up to your trip. From our online chat service to email support and telephone conversations, our team are always ready to help. All international school trips with PMGY will receive a Volunteer Handbook. We have Facebook groups for each of our destinations. Here you can find members of our international and local teams, as well as past, present and future participants. These pages, therefore, provide a great forum for participants to network, share experiences and community updates year-on-year.

 

Sometimes it can be difficult to picture yourself on our school trips abroad without yet being there. We, therefore, do our best to further manage expectations before you arrive through a variety of informative and action-packed videos on our PMGY Vimeo channel. These clips help provide you with a visual perspective of what you can expect during your time volunteering with us. Our webinars are not to be missed either. Running on selected Tuesdays, at 4pm UK time, our International Team provides invaluable advice for your upcoming trip. Each webinar covers something different. Our pre-departure webinar covers all of the essentials you need to know and do before joining us abroad. Our program preparation webinar is more project-specific, with advice and information for the time you will spend on placement. Finally, our safety webinar offers you some top tips on how to manage your safety and wellbeing across the pond. For those who are simply interested in learning more about PMGY, our team also run an introductory webinar. This provides an introduction to the volunteer organisation, our background, goals and volunteer opportunities overseas.

 

Teaching and childcare participants may wish to take their program preparation even further, through a 60 hour online TEFL course. This is the perfect introductory course for working with children and teaching English abroad. Participation in this course enables international volunteers to acquire key skills whilst working towards an internationally accredited certificate.

If you have not travelled much before, it is really hard to know what to expect. When anticipating school trips, many international participants (and their loved ones) are often concerned about safety and security. Although we can never guarantee experiences to be 100% trouble-free, we have taken all necessary precautions to ensure our programs are as safe as possible. Every program that PMGY offers has been personally inspected and selected by a director of PMGY. We have lived in the accommodation, experienced the orientation and worked on the projects. Through our frequent visits and daily communications, we have built strong, trusting relationships with our local staff.

 

In the unlikely event that something was to happen, participants have various layers of support available to them:

Projects are monitored on an on-going basis to gauge participants’ experiences. With the help of feedback, we are able to continually improve our placements and opportunities. Security and safety are frequently assessed as part of this. We ask our participants to raise any concerns with our local or International Team. This ensures that these can be addressed and/or resolved as readily and appropriately as possible.

 

Through pre-departure and in-country guidance, we do our best to prepare our international participants for their school expeditions. All school trip abroad participants are provided with a comprehensive safety briefing during their orientation period. Our local teams will go through everything from project introductions, to emergency procedures, how to use local transport and cultural differences. During this period, our team also provide participants with a full list of the important contact numbers.

 

Listed below are some general safety tips:

 

• Be modest with the amount of jewellery worn in public
• Do not drink tap water
• Be cautious of beggars or crowds. Incidents can occur when is confusion to distract you.
• Be cautious about removing money in public
• Always try to know where you are going before you attempt long journeys. Be especially careful at night
• Use reputable transport only. Our local staff will be able to recommend some during orientation
• Try to keep in groups at night and never walk alone along dark, empty streets
• The recognised tourist areas can be considered potentially high-risk areas for pickpockets and thieves
• Leave your valuables behind before a night out in the town
• For traffic safety, always keep looking to the left and right and walk slowly when crossing the road
• Do not accept drinks or food from strangers

PMGY welcome participants of all nationalities and backgrounds. The minimum age to join the program is 18 years, although our wildlife and elephant conservation programs welcome participants as young as 14, in the presence of a parent. There is no upper age limit for educational school trips abroad. All participants need to have a good level of English, although it does not need to be your first language. You do not need to speak the local language.

 

All school trips abroad participants must be able to provide a clean criminal background check in advance of volunteering with us abroad. In general, no formal experience or qualifications are required on our school trips, just lots of energy, enthusiasm and preparation!

 

In order to confirm your place on a PMGY program, you need to pay your Registration Fee of 249 USD. The remaining fee is then due no less than 60 days prior to your program start date. During this period if you need to make a change to your trip (destination, program or date) then this can be facilitated free of charge.
