WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY ON A MIDWIFERY ELECTIVE OVERSEAS?

Your workday will usually start around 9am and finish at 2pm, Monday to Friday. There is always the option to extend your afternoons at the hospital. You will have lunch usually at around midday at the placement or on return from the hospital at the Volunteer House. The exact schedule will be discussed during your orientation.

You’ll spend the day observing qualified midwives and doctors as they consult with patients in different maternity units. This will give you the chance to see the different conditions that pregnant women in the developing world face.

Work with the expectant mothers as you help midwives prepare them for labour and delivery. Compare and contrast the equipment midwives use and the measures they take to assess patients. Sit in on consultations and learn about complications that can occur for each patient. You may even be able to witness a birth in the delivery room.

Spend your afternoons shadowing the midwives as they assess newborn babies. Learn about the steps they take to make sure the babies are healthy. Listen in to the conversations they have with new mothers around postnatal care.

WHAT TYPE OF MIDWIFERY PLACEMENTS ARE AVAILABLE?

You’ll shadow local staff in a range of maternity units in a hospital setting. Examples include obstetrics, gynaecology, prenatal, neonatal, postnatal, theatre, intensive care and labour. This is an exciting opportunity to gain insight into all aspects of maternity and midwifery.

HOW HANDS-ON WILL MY MIDWIFERY PLACEMENT BE?

Your level of involvement on an international midwifery elective placement is dictated by a range of factors. First of all your medical experience, but also the duration of your elective and willingness to get involved. The medical staff are accountable for you whilst you’re under their supervision. Ultimately, it is completely up to them if you are permitted and want to get involved in hands-on procedures.

Previous midwifery students have been given the chance to undertake some basic hands-on involvement at the project. This includes completing basic consultations and health checks on patients in the maternity ward under the supervision of local staff. However, to reiterate we can never guarantee or endorse hands-on experience should you choose to get hands-on. Such a decision ultimately lies with the medical staff.

CAN PMGY SUPPORT WITH MY ELECTIVE PLACEMENT DOCUMENTATION?

PMGY can complete paperwork for midwifery electives overseas once your place has been confirmed on the program. Additionally, project staff in-country can also sign-off any paperwork that is required by your course tutors. However, while our team will do their best to complete any paperwork, we are unable to guarantee that we will be able to comply with every learning objective and requirement of your university/college. PMGY regularly receives midwifery students on our projects globally, with ties to some leading universities and colleges.
