We will convey all necessary content and information about the trip and hold a Q&A session after the presentation to ensure all attendees are as informed as possible before signing up.

For every 10 students, 1 teacher spot will be provided for free! We can also arrange and provide flights and insurance options for all travellers should this be applicable.

Step 5: PMGY Pre-departure Support - Throughout the build-up to your Ecuador school trip, we will be on hand to support you whatever way possible. Whether it be through creating your bespoke trip handbook, completing risk assessments, communicating safety management procedures or providing project preparation webinars, we will have all bases covered.

Step 6: Pre-departure Session - Around 2 months before your school trip begins in Ecuador, we will come to your school and do a final pre-departure session with staff, students and parents. This will ensure that everything is in place before your school head overseas and the content covered will align with this accordingly. We will also distribute PMGY T-shirts to all travellers at the session!

Step 7: Before You Go - In the days before your arrival into Ecuador, we will be in close and regular contact with you to make sure everything is in place for your trip. Step 8: Enjoy the Trip! - When on the trip, our ground team will become your day to day port of call. We will touch base with them daily to make sure your trip is running smoothly. If required, we will be available 24/7 from afar. We will check in with you across the trip to see how everything is going. SCHOOL CASE STUDY - GERMAN INT. SCHOOL OF NEW YORK, USA

Who - German International School of New York (GISNY) from USA. 16 students and 2 staff members from GISNY travelled to Ecuador on a group trip expedition with PMGY.

What - A 11 day expedition to Ecuador in total. The trip centred on community volunteering in Quito and enjoying an immersive homestay and host family experience throughout. The volunteering was varied with GISNY students supporting at an indigenous daycare centre, an elderly shelter, a horse therapy program and a special needs project for children with cerebral palsy. Cultural and adventure activities were included on each of the volunteer days including a nighttime city tour of Quito, a cable-car ride to Pichincha volcano, enjoying a soccer match and partaking in a salsa class. Weekends provided GISNY students with some downtime as we arranged some adventure travel around Ecuador for the group. This included a culture day with the indigenous Tsachilas tribe, heading to the equator line for some physics experiments, a gentle trek around Quilotoa Lake and day tour to Otavalo city in the Andean highlands. The trip was action-packed throughout as GISNY students gave their time and effort through a wide range of community volunteering. However, there was plenty of adventure and photo opportunities to ensure the volunteering was balanced with a cultural and immersive Ecuador experience.

Where - GISNY experienced so much and a range of locations in their 14 days in Ecuador. Arriving into Ecuador's capital city, the main segment of the trip was the community volunteer placement based with homestay families in central Quito. This was the group's base for the trip ensuring they had home comforts throughout and a settled headquarters. Across the trip, the group explored not only the breadth of Ecuador but also the outskirts of Quito. Whether it was the indigenous area of Tsachilas, the Andean highlands of Otavalo, the lagoon of Quilotoa or balancing the north and south hemispheres at the equator line, GISNY experienced a range of locations in their journey through Ecuador.

When - GISNY joined PMGY on an overseas group expedition originally for 2 weeks in May 2019. The school enjoyed the trip and cultural experience so much that they teamed together with PMGY to provide another school trip to Ecuador with the second cohort of students 6 months later in November 2019. The collaboration between PMGY and GISNY is so positive and the student experience so fulfilling that the school is now making initial plans towards a third trip back to Ecuador with PMGY in 2020.

Why - GISNY reached out to PMGY looking to organise a South America school trip. It quickly became apparent that Ecuador would be a great opportunity to tick many of the boxes that the GISNY staff were looking to achieve from the trip. This included accessibility with direct flights from New York as well as an itinerary that would provide a strong cultural exchange for students, meaningful community volunteering and some memorable travel experiences. As one of the academic staff from GISNY joining the trip had experience living in Quito and PMGY could provide a bespoke and tailored itinerary that matched GISNY's trip objectives then the school trip to Ecuador quickly became a realisation.

How - From initial research on the PMGY schools trip webpage, Sigrid from GISNY got in touch with PMGY in late 2018 to make initial enquiries about what school trip services PMGY could provide. After productive and trust-building phone calls took place, it became apparent that Ecuador would be the best South American destination for GISNY's school trip expedition. Philip and Josh both travelled to New York to provide an information session and meet and greet with interested students, parents and teachers. They provided all necessary trip information and logistics and answered and questions or queries that students, parents or teachers had. This process again took place virtually before GISNY's second trip to Ecuador and PMGY continuing positive communications through emails and phone calls with Sigrid in the interim. PMGY also arranged GISNY's flights and insurances on both of the trips to ensure that all logistics were managed throughout the process.

Feedback - "We are so grateful to PMGY that they made this great experience come true for us twice in 2019! PMGY have a great team on the ground to make the trip run so smoothly and safely in Ecuador and some wonderful host families to accommodate our students. The trip support before students arrive in Ecuador is fantastic with Josh and Philip flying out to New York to meet and present an information session to teachers, parents and staff before the first trip commenced. This then took place virtually before the second trip with emails and phone calls all exchanged efficiently in the interim. Any amendments or slight changes that we wanted in place from the first trip before the second trip began were all actioned and integrated into the itinerary with no hassles or extra costs. Ecuador is a country of great culture, people and opportunities and I am glad many of our students have got to experience this in an authentic manner whether it be through volunteering, cultural activities or some adventure travel. Parents were full of praise of what their kids have experienced on their stay in Quito and we were overwhelmed with their enthusiastic appreciation of the trip that PMGY put together. It has been such a joy for us to come to Quito with students for a second time and we are sure that there will be a third time with our new eleventh graders next year! We look forward to continuing with the Quito project in the future and chaperoning our students again."

SCHOOL VOLUNTEER PROJECT SUMMARIES

The core of the sample overseas school trip with PMGY to Ecuador will be centred around the volunteering schedule and making a positive impact in the local community. The core projects within the sample itinerary that students will be completing volunteer work in is childcare. Students will also support other volunteer projects when in Quito such as spending a day volunteering at an elderly shelter and on a horse therapy project.

It is also important to note that we also have English Teaching and Medical volunteer opportunities in Ecuador. As a result, your volunteer schedule can be tailored to include these aspects. Consequently, the sample itinerary and volunteer options included within can be amended to a bespoke Ecuador expedition for your school.

Childcare - Ecuador is home to over 200,000 neglected children due to abandonment, death and alcoholism. Many children are forced into homes and living on the streets due to dysfunctional settings or abuse within their own families.

A major reason for neglected children is the cultural acceptance of child marriage. This results in an increased rate of births to mothers 10-14 years of age. The lower aged mothers result in a decreased level of familiarity on proper health and nutrition for infants. In the indigenous population, over 50% of children have a high level of chronic malnutrition. As a result, they are removed from their homes due to neglect.

Along with forms of neglect, there is the prevalence of abuse at high levels in countries of South America. Major areas of abuse are domestic violence and corporal punishment to women and children in the rural/indigenous communities. Therefore, please note that as international volunteers you may be working with children from vulnerable backgrounds.

San Roque Indigenous Daycare Centre is a community-based project that will be a core volunteer placement setting during your school trip in Ecuador. The origins behind the project are to provide a safe fun learning environment for young children. These children would previously spend time out at the markets with their working mothers. Consequently, they would be stuck in the sizzling heat with no daily structure or wellbeing.

Beginning as a small project with only one small room, the project has expanded quickly. As a result, the daycare centre has three large classroom formats home to 90 children in total. Consequently, students will split across each room so they can provide as many hands as possible and support the local staff to the maximum. These children range from 1-3 years and the project runs across the day. Students will volunteer for a 4 hour period before the children take their afternoon nap.

At the project, volunteers will teach about hygiene, read stories, play music and sing songs. Volunteers will also be expected to lead arts and crafts activities and help local staff with snacks and breakfast time. There are usually 1-2 local staff members in each classroom for volunteer support.

SAMPLE ITINERARY

We have put together a sample 14 day itinerary that incorporates the ultimate school trip in Ecuador. For the reason that it provides a perfect blend of volunteering, travelling, adventure and cultural immersion. Moreover, the trip itinerary is fully structured and inclusive throughout. However, we understand each school has different objectives from an overseas trip and different criteria to meet. As a result, we can tailor the sample itinerary below into a bespoke itinerary that matches your goals and objectives for an overseas school expedition in Ecuador.

In short, we can tailor a trip around your requirements and work with you to create your personalised school trip itinerary so the students and school can get the most from the experience. Whether you wish to extend or shorten the duration of the trip, solely focus on volunteering, or would like to incorporate volunteering into a wider trip with travel opportunities – we can work together to create the perfect itinerary for you. Above all, we will ensure your school trip to Ecuador remains fully affordable, structured, safe and inclusive.

Day 1 - Arrival & Introduction to Host Families

Welcome to Ecuador! Your group will arrive at Quito International Airport. On arrival, you will be greeted by Jorge from the PMGY Ecuador team who will be easily visible in his PMGY T-Shirt and standing by Amazonia Cafe meeting point in the arrivals terminal.

We will then transport you by private bus to your host family accommodation in central Quito. The city is the highest official capital in the world, resting at an elevation of 2,850 metres above sea level. Quito is classified as a UNESCO heritage site, still upholding many of its historical features that date back hundreds of years.

The journey takes around 45 minutes. Quito will be your base for your school trip in Ecuador with PMGY. You will be supporting a range of projects and communities across Quito. In addition, Quito is a convenient hub for all the day trips you will experience in your school trip to Ecuador. This includes heading to the Equator, Quilotoa Lake and Tsachilas. You will have the chance to settle into your homestay accommodation and get to know your host families. They will provide you with a traditional Ecuadorian dinner that evening to introduce you to traditional Ecuadorian cuisine!

Day 2 - Orientation & Introductory Spanish Lesson

Your first morning in Ecuador will start with a cultural initiation at our local team Spanish School Headquarters. The location of which will be walking distance from your host family. Our host families will walk with you and drop you off at the school accordingly. The Spanish School will become your daily meeting point to meet the team before you head to your volunteer project or day trip.

You will have a basic group Spanish lesson in the morning led by our local coordinator. This will allow you to pick up a few basic words and phrases if required to set you up well for your next two weeks. Ecuador is one of twenty-one Spanish speaking countries in the world.

After a healthy lunch, you will receive your orientation. Our local team will begin to teach you about life in Ecuador, the do’s and don’ts, and the local culture and religion. This will continue with a preview of your trip itinerary, safety advice and a presentation of all the projects we support in the community. The team will also take you on a gentle walking tour of the local area so you are familiar with key points of interest and surrounding amenities. This will include giving students the chance to change money and visit the supermarket.

After a full day induction to life in Ecuador, it’s time to reflect on your first full day in this amazing country. Tomorrow will be the start of your volunteering and giving back to the Quito community.

Days 3-5 - Volunteering at San Roque Daycare Centre

We will start our project work on day 3. After a good breakfast at your host family, we will meet at the Spanish School at 9am each day to head to the volunteer project. Our local coordinator will travel with you by public transport to the project site.

It will be time for everyone to roll up their sleeves and get their thinking caps on for the next 3 days as students volunteer at San Roque Daycare Centre.

There are 90 children at the daycare centre. Consequently, students will split across each room so they can provide as many hands as possible and support the local staff to the maximum. A mix of our local staff and project staff are assigned to each group of students to ensure you have a support network across your 3 days at the project.

The children are aged from 1-3 years of age. Because children are at a very young age, students should focus on keeping activities interactive and engaging. Examples include playing games, dancing and arts and crafts. There will be plenty of materials at hand for you to make the most of your time on the project.

In addition, students will help staff with the daily chores at the project. This will including helping prepare and distribute the mid-morning snack.

Outside of the project, we will provide additional cultural and adventure activities for students to enjoy. This will allow you to immerse yourself into the Ecuadorian culture and lifestyle further and ensure your days remain action-packed! Examples will include a cooking class and an option to try the local Guinea Pig delicacy should you want to and some salsa dancing. Our host families will ensure you remain well fed by preparing traditional dinners for students each evening in addition to your breakfast and lunch.

Day 6 - Exploring the Equator

We will head for our first adventure outside of Quito on day 6. The origins of the name Ecuador translates into the equator and this is where we are off to today! We will be heading for a full day to explore the line that separates the northern and southern hemisphere.

The first port of call will be Mital Del Mundo which translates to the Middle of the World. You will be able to explore the park at your leisure and learn more about Ecuador’s history and indigenous communities through a range of exhibitions and displays. At the centre of the Mitad del Mundo stands the centrepiece of the park: a 30m-high monument topped by a brass globe containing a viewing platform and a museum.

We will finish our day exploring the equator by heading to the actual centre of the Earth as proven by GPS. Students will receive a guided tour revolving around the equator line. You will undertake some physics experiments that will show you the quirkiness of living life on the equator line.

We will drop you back to your host family in time for your evening meal. Students can get another good nights rest before heading out for another full day trip tomorrow.

Day 7 - Quilotoa Lake

Today we will head south to Quilotoa Lake. The journey time to reach the lake will take around 3 hours. Nearby the Andean Mountains, there is this beautiful emerald colour lagoon that is located inside a volcano crater. With a height of 3800m above sea level, students will receive a guided tour around the volcanic-crater lake and have many opportunities to take some spectacular photos.

A lookout on the crater rim offers stunning views of the lake 400m below, snowcapped peaks of Cotopaxi and Iliniza Sur in the distance. When you ask the locals how deep it is, they say it has no bottom, which seems entirely plausible given its awesomeness (the geologists say 250m).

After a day exploring this natural wonder, we will make the journey north back to Quito for a late dinner back at the host family before beginning a new volunteer project tomorrow.

Day 8 - Angels 4 Feet Volunteering & Salsa Class

Today will be a very unique volunteer experience as we head to the highest point in Ecuador to volunteer with Angels De 4 Patas. This translates into Angels for feet as we will spend our morning volunteering at a horse therapy project. Students will work with dogs, horses and also children who come to the project for therapy and stimulation by being with the animals.

There will be some spectacular views from the top so make sure to bring your camera! Moreover, it will be hot and humid so also bring your sunscreen, cap and plenty of water.

After lunch, we will prepare for our project work on day 9 by heading to the supermarket as a group to collect donations for the elderly shelter project. In the evening you will all partake in a salsa class before returning to host family for dinner and rest!

Day 9 - ABC Elderly Shelter Volunteering & Soccer

We will have a slightly later start today, so students can have an extended rest. We will spend the day volunteering at the ABC Elderly Shelter project which is located a short walk from the Spanish School Headquarters.

Students will get involved in a range of activities at the elderly shelter. This will include playing bingo, supporting food preparation in the kitchen or simply lending an ear to hear stories from the residents you will meet. There will be some great stories to learn and just by taking the time to listen and engage will go a long way for the people.

Our team will host an afternoon celebration session at the Spanish School for students to enjoy. This will include celebrating any birthdays, playing traditional party games and the team getting some feedback on how your Ecuador adventure has been going so far. In the evening we will head to Carolina Park to play a soccer match. After all, soccer is the national sport of Ecuador!

Day 10 - Childcare Volunteering, Guayasamin Museum & City Tour

The structure of day 10 will be slightly different. The morning will begin with a visit to a Guayasamin art museum in Quito. The museum showcases some of the work of the most famous South American painters.

From here, we will take private transport to an orphanage placement for the next volunteer segment for the students. Located outside of the city, the orphanage is around 1 hour away and home to 35 children.

Students will split into smaller groups to ensure greater engagement and interactions can be made with the children. You will provide care and attention for the children through a range of games and activities. You will also get creative in the kitchen as you prepare some pizza for you and the children to enjoy.

In the evening, it is time to explore Quito by night as we enjoy a nighttime city tour of Quito. The tour will last around 3 hours as visit many of the famous streets, churches and statues that Quito is renowned for.

Day 11 - Angels Home Therapy Volunteering & Pichincha Volcano

Day 11 will be our final day volunteering and supporting the project network in Quito. To get to the Angels Home Therapy Project, we will take a 45 minute journey south. The project is home to only 15 children, but each child has their own individual needs. More specifically, the children all have Cerebal Palsy and therefore have limited movements and can’t talk, but they can understand everything.

The children receive three types of therapy at the project. This includes horse therapy, water therapy and physiotherapy. Students will help in providing one to one care and engagement with the students under the guidance and support of the local staff.

In the afternoon, we will head to Pichincha Volcano. We will take a unique form of transport to reach the Volcano as we jump on a cable car to the highlands of Quito’s volcanoes. If the weather is good, you will have stunning panoramic views from the top and even a swing on the hilltop to enjoy!

Day 12 - Otavalo City

Your volunteering in Ecuador has now come to an end and we will spend our final couple days explore Ecuador further afield.

A very early start is in order on day 12 as we leave at 7am for Otavalo city which is located in the Andean highlands. This is a full day trip where we will have set timings for each activity.

Across the day we will take in some famous lake views and visit indigenous markets which is great for shopping and picking up some handicrafts. We will also visit the crater de volcano where you can witness 2 lakes segmented around the crater.

We will then head back to the host families in Quito and be home in time for dinner.

Day 13 - Tsachilas Tribe Tour

Today is our final full day in Ecuador and our last day exploring this amazing country. Another early start is required as we depart at 7am for the indigenous area of Tsachilas.

The journey will take us towards the coast as we move through the cloud forest area. Students will receive a very interactive experience as they meet with an indigenous tribe. The tribe only speak an indigenous language. Therefore they do not speak Spanish, English or even Quechuan.

Students will have a full day learning about the indigenous tribe and getting involved in their culture, music, food and clothing. You will enjoy one of their typical lunches and also paint your face as the local tribe members do.

You will spend much of the day by the river so it is important to bring all the essentials you need such as sunscreen, water, camera, mosquito repellent, towel and a pair of comfortable sturdy trainers.

We will again return back to the host families in time for one final evening meal in Ecuador.

Day 14 - Farewell Quito & Hometime

Sadly, all good things must come to an end as our 14 day Ecuador adventure comes to an end. Head to the central market in Quito to collect any final souvenirs required.

Our team will collect you from your host family in good time before your flight home. As a result, they will transfer you back to Quito International Airport for your return flight home. It’s been a great two weeks!

ACCOMMODATION - HOST FAMILIES

During your school trip to Ecuador, you will spend the base of your time in central Quito in homestay accommodation with local host families. All accommodation is comfortable, secure and vetted. The homestay accommodation will be based in central Quito, which is a hub for the volunteer placement settings. You will stay in a safe and secure part of the city. Moreover, all the host families have years of experience hosting International Volunteers and have been rigorously vetted by our groud team in Ecuador.

As a result, our host families continuously provide a warm and comfortable home environment for our volunteers and students.
